Blog Math

Image result for ceramic tileCongratulations to the students who correctly answered last week's blog math question.  There seemed to be some confusion regarding the areas of the top of the island that was to be tiled.  Since the counter measured 1m x 2m, we must convert the dimensions to centimetres to calculate the area.
counter:  A = l x w                      each tile:  A = l x w
                   = 100cm x 200cm                        = 10cm x 10cm
                   = 20 000 square centimetres        = 100 square cm

To calculate the number of tiles needed, divide the area of the counter by the area of one tile.
20 000 divided by 100 = 200 tiles needed.

Now, multiply to calculate the cost.

200 tiles x $2.49 = $498.00  It will cost $498 to tile the island.

Here is the next question, which is due on Tuesday February 14.

Image result for patio stonesThe Colautti Family desires to install a patio in their backyard.  They will be using concrete patio stones that measure 20 cm square.  The area that will be paved with the patio stones measures five metres by seven metres.  The patio stones are sold by the pallet.  Each pallet contains 25 patio stones and costs $50.  How many pallets are needed?  How much will it cost to purchase the patio stones needed to create the patio?  Justify your thinking.
