Surface Area of a Rectangular Prism

Image result for net of a rectangular prismToday will mark the fourth day that we will have been working on calculating the surface area of rectangular prisms.  As usual, I assess each student's work daily.  As a result I have noticed many problems. We have addressed these in class, but for some, their incorrect practices have not changed.  Parents, I am requesting that you review your child's workbook with them and use this blog as well as the anchor charts this weekend and have them correct all their errors.  Even when I write feedback in their books, some students either don't read it or don't act upon it.  Thank you very much in advance!

Problems are:
-nets are not drawn correctly:  six faces are always needed and a ruler must be used
-dimensions are not labelled or not correctly labelled on the net
-students must recognize the correct type of rectangular prism.  If they decide that faces are congruent when they are not, they will get the wrong answer every time
-students are not using units (cm, m, km, etc.) at all steps in the calculations
-students are confusing linear units and square units
-students are multiplying the wrong dimensions together
-students are not using the format as modelled on the anchor charts
-students are not making all of their thinking visible:  when steps are skipped they get the wrong answer and I cannot assist in finding the errors because they did not follow the correct format

Please note that everyone took home their gym rubric today so they could get it signed by a parent.  My comments are on a white piece of paper stapled to the green rubric.  Please return them ASAP.
