Religion and Thank You!

Looking ahead to next week, our class will be walking to Corpus Christi Church on Tuesday afternoon so that we can participate in a tour of the entire building.  Mrs. Bertram, pastoral minister, will be guiding us.  We will also begin preparing to host the Ash Wednesday Mass, which will be held on Wednesday February 10.  Please try to join us if your schedule allows.

Image result for student led conferences elementaryThank you very much to all of the "early birds" who have scheduled a conference with your child for Thursday February 11.  If you haven't, please do so.  Also, for those families in our class with twin siblings, please sign up for two conferences as each child will present their own portfolio to you.  Please note:  each conference officially begins at each third of the hour (ie. 4:00, 4:20, 4:40, etc.) so if you registered for an odd time, your time is actually the nearest third of the hour.  Your child can explain why this works this way, so please ask them!  Please plan to stay for approximately twenty minutes.  Siblings of any age will not attend the conference, so chairs will be provided in the hall outside of our classroom for their convenience.

...we are working on fractions and decimals in math?  Truthfully, only for a fraction of the day.
...we are working on movement sequences in gym which is part of our dance curriculum?
...we are completing our non-fiction book talks this week?
...our new literacy unit focuses on biographies and autobiographies? Our next book talk will focus on this text form too!

Image result for student led conference invitation for parentsYou are cordially invited to the Student-Led Conference that will be hosted by your child! As I blogged about earlier this month, I am requesting to see every child and one or both parents so that you may see the work that your child has been doing in grade six.  This event will be held on Thursday February 11.  Information notes were sent home on Tuesday with the youngest in the family.  Please select a conference time via our school website, or click here for a quick link.  Sign up early so that you can secure the time of your choice.  If you require an alternate time, please let me know so that those arrangements can be made as soon as possible.

WOW and Blog Math

Image result for WOW logoCongratulations to this month's WOW award winners.  The theme this time around was being able to use feedback from the teacher to improve performance.  Ava, Kaci, and Steven L. have demonstrated that they use feedback and want to improve!  Keep up the great work!

Image result for proportional reasoningCongratulations to the 23 students who handed their blog math solution in on time.  Three students had to work at recess.
The correct solution, which was related to last week's question, requires that you divide the cost by the volume to figure out how much one mL of paint would cost.
First convery 1L to 1000mL by multiplying.   1L x 1000 = 1000mL
If you divide $15 by 1000, 1mL=$0.015
So 0.6L x 1000 = 600mL        600mL x $0.015 = $9
0.75L x 1000 = 750mL           750mL x $0.015 = $11.25
2.5L x 1000 = 2500mL          2500mL x $0.015 = $37.50
4.54L x 1000 = 4540mL        4540mL x $0.015 = $68.10

Here is the new question.  It is due on Tuesday February 2, 2016 at 8:10am.  Please copy the question on a lined piece of paper and place it in the IN BOX with your solution, using the steps of problem solving.

Good News

Image result for good newsCongratulations to the following students who were last week's Good News ticket winners: Sabrina, Jason, and Ava.  Keep up the good work!

The measurement tests were returned to the students on Friday for a parent signature.  I also highly recommend that it be corrected due to the inferior results by many students.  The good news is that this is the first test that NO ONE skipped any questions or any parts of questions!  If the SWYK has not been returned yet, please do so ASAP.

Types of Sentences

We have been working on the types of sentences lately in Literacy.  Pictured here you will see the supplies that we used yesterday for our sorting game.  Ask your child about it - hopefully they can identify the types of sentences that they see when they do their nightly reading.

Grade 6C Has Been a Little Shady Lately

This is my collection of photos that I took during the many art lessons that we had while learning to use charcoal (block and willow) and chalk to create shadows, shading, the appearance of light, and three dimensional objects.  They appear here from the most recent to the oldest.

Blog Math

Image result for proportional reasoning Congratulations to the students who attempted last week's blog math.  Only five students did not hand them in on time so they spent their recess completing this task.

The correct answer is that the smallest jar is the best buy.  When you divide the price by the volume, the cost is $0.008 per mL, but the medium jar is $0.0097 per mL, and the largest jar is $0.0091 per mL.

Here is this week's question.  It is due on Tuesday January 26 at 8:10AM.  Please copy the question on a lined piece of paper, put your name on it, solve the question using the steps of problem solving, and place it in the IN BOX.

Math Test on the Horizon

Image result for math test clip artOur latest math test, evaluating the measurement strand, will be held on Thursday.  Please note that we have not followed unit 6 in our textbook completely because it does not align with the curriculum.  We will be evaluated on surface area of a rectangular prism, volume of a rectangular prism, capacity using metric units, mass using metric units, and conversion from one unit to the other.  Please refer to the anchor charts on our website (use the link above) for studying purposes.  The SWYK for this unit will be sent home tomorrow for a parent signature.  Please return it promptly.

Image result for milk bagsAs of yesterday, we have collected 89 milk bags since January 4!  Keep them coming!

Image result for abstract sculpturesWe began our sculptures using coat hangers and panty hose yesterday.  Special thanks is extended to Mr. Plante who donated the blocks of wood, and to Mr. Colautti who drilled all of the holes in them.  Some students did not have the required supplies at school to use and I had to pull from my stash so that they could begin with us.  Please send in any late supplies so that I may replenish my stock.
