Blog Math and Game Preparations

Image result for coinsCongratulations to all those students who submitted the LAST blog math on time and with precision.  The correct answer is:
Jennifer:  T = 13q                         Tom:  T = 5q + 7e
               65 = 13q                               375 = 5q + 7e
               13     13                                 375 = 5x5 + 7e
                 q = 5                                    375 = 25 + 7e
                                                      375 - 25 = 25 - 25 + 7e
                                                             350 = 7e
                                                               7       7
                                                                  e = 50
The value of the Q coin is $0.05 and the value of the E coin is $0.50

As previously mentioned this is the LAST blog math of this school year!

While the grade  six students work on the EQAO assessment each morning, the grade 7 students from my class and Mr. Cowan's class have been busy designing board games to match the success criteria that was created last week.  Today we begin to play them and give peer feedback.  Watch for the rubric to come home next week!

Frisbee and Information

 Yesterday the weather was great so we were able to get outside and continue to work on our Frisbee skills.  After a warm-up, we worked on some "target practise" drills using the soccer poles, pylons, and cardboard boxes.  Check it out!

Image result for textingDo your children use any type of personal electronic device to communicate with friends by texting?  If they do, you should check out this news report.  It informs everyone of the new "lingo" that is being used to communicate in a way that parents and others are not familiar with in order to communicate messages that are not always good.  If you are interested click here.

North of 60 Project Results

Image result for north of 60 projectI am very pleased to announce the results of our Guardians Give Back project.  Our class set a lofty goal of collecting 300 1 kg bags of oats in three weeks.  While we did not reach that goal, our work plus that of Corpus Christi Parish has smashed that goal.  In total our class collected 107 packages (132 kg) of oats and $192.15.  I went shopping and purchased 40 bags of oats for $119.60.  Therefore our final donation was 147 packages (172 kg) of oats and $72.55.  The money will be used by the St. Vincent de Paul Society to top up other donations for this project that are lacking.  My class brought everything over to the church on Thursday morning.  THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!

Blog Math

Image result for gym wallCongratulations to the students who completed last week's question on time and with precision.  Four students did not complete it even though they wrote it in their agenda and they were reminded that it was due immediately after the long weekend.

The correct answer is:
3.6 m divided by 0.5 m = 7.2 The wall's shadow is 7.2 times longer than the person's shadow, therefore, the wall is 7.2 times taller than the person.
1.8 m x 7.2 = 12.96  The gym wall is 12.96 m tall.

Here is the next question that is due on Tuesday May 30 at 8:10 AM.

Image result for coins with a Q on them and coins with an E on themWhen Jennifer and Tom visit another country, they find two types of coins are used there.  One coin has a Q on it and the other has an E on it.  Jennifer has 13 Q coins, Tom has 5 Q coins and 7 E coins.  If Jennifer has a total of $0.65 and Tom has a total of $3.75,  what is the value of each type of coin?  Justify your thinking.  Grade 7 students MUST use algebraic expressions using variables to solve this question.  Grade six students may complete this any method that they choose.

Image result for final blog math*This is the final "Blog Math" question of this school year.  I hope that you were able to share and solve math with your family, expand your knowledge and skills, and develop some skills in responsibility along the way.
