Parts of Speech

Image result for parts of speechWe have been reviewing the parts of speech that the students should already know and extending their understanding by including new aspects found at the grade six level.  First of all, the term parts of speech refers to the building blocks of a sentence such as:  nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.  So far we have reviewed nouns, with the introduction of abstract nouns (ideas such as wisdom, loyalty, love, etc.); verbs with emphasis on verb tenses and the role of "helping verbs"; and adjectives (and their placement in a sentence).  We did a group brainstorming activity and created anchor charts.  Please see them on our website.

Their task was to record adverbs as I read on sticky notes.  We discussed what they noticed about adverbs used in the text.  All of this information will appear on our anchor chart that can be found on the anchor chart archive page of our website.  It is important that students know that the term "parts of speech" means and what each type are.  Feel free to review them with your child(ren).  Thank you so much in advance!
