The First Week Comes to an End!

Beginning on Monday, one student each day will present a new "word of the day".  They are to select words that we could use daily in reading and writing (no crazy health-related terms, for example).  They could find words in their nightly reading, something they hear on the radio/television, and/or they could look a familiar word up in a thesaurus and find a more sophisticated way to say that word (find a synonym).  They are to fill in the cards available in the classroom as shown here.
This is the front of the card.  The word is clearly displayed in marker, including the part of speech.  There is also the meaning and a collection of inflected forms.

This is the back of the card where the word is used in a good sentence, not found in the dictionary or thesaurus.

Please check the class calendar on our website to see when it is your turn!  Do not duplicate a word that your classmate has already presented!

It has sure been a busy week!  We worked on our inferring skills by understanding symbolism in music, lyrics, and texts.  Collectively we composed our class mission statement and we are working on personal ones as well.  This will lead into setting goals for the term.  Finally, we have selected a "class anthem" based on our goals and vision for the year and our work on symbolism.  Here it is!  ENJOY!
