Surface Area of a Rectangular Prism

We have been working on calculating the surface area of rectangular prisms.  The students were put into groups and given a box.  Each group was asked to calculate the surface area and show their thinking.  After some questioning and consolidation by me, we were able to realize that there are some congruent faces in a rectangular prism, and that we need to use the formula for calculating area in the process.  The number of congruent faces depends on the type of prism that the students have to work with.  I am very particular about the way that the students write down their work and response, so that they clearly show their thinking in a logical way.  Be sure to check out the anchor charts that we have developed.
