Lent is on the Horizon

Today is Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day (packzi day, "Fat Tuesday", Mardi Gras) as it is affectionately called.  This is the last day before Lent begins, so we Catholics are called to use up all of the excess in our cupboards before we begin to fast for the season of Lent.  The SAC delivered a pancake snack to each student today.
"Berry Delicious"
Thanks to the parent volunteers who served the food.

All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday (tomorrow), and Good Friday.  This means that we are not to eat meat, and are asked to eat one full meal with two snacks during the day as we remember the fasting and sacrifice that Jesus did for us.  All Catholics 14 years of age and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays during Lent.  While the students in our class do not fall into this category, it would build character if they observed this rule.  That means that they could bring vegetarian pizza, cheese sandwiches, hummus and pita, salads, tomato soup, macaroni and cheese, tuna or salmon sandwiches, eggs, pasta with marinara sauce, etc. to school for lunch on those days.  Similar menu items can also be enjoyed at home for dinner.  Give it a try!  It really is not that bad!

Hope to see you all at Ash Wednesday mass tomorrow morning at 9:30am at Corpus Christi Church.
