Math News

Image result for central tendencyAfter reviewing the students' math work that was completed last week, I was generally very disappointed.  The reasons are:  students seemed to invent their own methods of calculating these averages, students did not complete all of the steps necessary to complete these averages, students did not complete all aspects of the questions, student work was very messy and therefore difficult to interpret, and/or students did not use the complete set of data to complete these averages.  At the grade six level, the students need to be responsible for their learning.  Since there are multiple anchor charts available to them, I have taught the class this work for multiple days, this was taught in grade five, and I am always available to assist those who need it, it makes me think that some students are working quickly without the focus on quality.  Parents, I know that I can count on your assistance and support, however.  If it is possible, please encourage quality rather than speed when your child is completing their work.  They are always encouraged to check over their work for completion and quality of work, so they may need reminders in this area.  We will complete this unit before the Christmas holidays, so the test will be next week.
